Planetochelys was named by Weems (1988). Its type is Planetochelys savoiei. It is the type genus of Planetochelyidae.

It was assigned to Sinemydidae by Weems (1988); to Cryptodira by Holroyd et al. (2001); to Planetochelyidae by Hutchison (2013); and to Pankinosternoidea by Joyce and Bourque (2016).
