Hyolithes was named by d'Eichwald (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-l P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,87]. It is the type genus of Hyolithidae.
It was assigned to Hyolithida by Landing and Bartowski (1996) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Hyolithidae by Mason (1935), Henningsmoen (1952), Fisher (1962) and Malinky (2006).
