Bellerophon acutilira was named by Hall (1859). It is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Protowarthia acutilira by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); it was corrected as Bellerophon acutilirata by Clarke and Swartz (1913); it was recombined as Sinuitopsis acutilira by Rollins and Batten (1968); it was recombined as Sinuitina acutilira by Blodgett et al. (1999) and Wagner (2023).
