Microcornus was named by Mambetov (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Cm Boto-u Sepkoski's reference number: 87,270,923,1006].

It was assigned to Calyptoptomatida by Duan (1984); to Hyolithida by Sepkoski (2002) and Malinky and Skovsted (2004); and to Nelegerocornidae by Wotte (2006).
