Taxonomy
Bellerophon capax was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) [Bellerophon capax Ulrich in Ulrich & Scofield 1897]. Its type specimen is USNM 45698, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Sphenosphaera capax by Knight (1945), Wahlman (1992) and Wagner (2023).
