Bellerophon carbonarius was named by Cox (1857). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Euphemus carbonarius by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); it was recombined as Euphemus carbonaria by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Euphemites carbonarius by Yochelson (1960) and Pan (1997).
