Bellerophon palinurus was named by Billings (1865). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Oxydiscus palinurus by Ulrich and Scofield (1897); it was recombined as Tropidodiscus palinurus by Knight (1941); it was recombined as Eobucania palinurus by Wagner (2023).
