Clioderma saffordi was named by Hall (1861). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Pterotheca saffordi by Foerste (1924), Bradley (1930), Knight and Bridge (1944), Wilson (1951), Knight et al. (1960), Wahlman (1992) and Wagner (2023).
