Shelbyoceras was named by Ulrich et al. (1931). Its type is Shelbyoceras robustum.
It was assigned to Cyrtendoceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1943); to Ellesmeroceratidae by Unklesbay and Young (1956); to Hypseloconidae by Runnegar and Jell (1976); to Shelbyoceridae by Stinchcomb (1986); and to Hypseloconida by Sepkoski (2002).
