Robustum was named by Stinchcomb and Darrough (1995) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem Sepkoski's reference number: 1114]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Robustidae.

It was assigned to Robustidae by Stinchcomb and Darrough (1995); to Hemithecellitina by Sepkoski (2002); to Septemchitonidae by Vendrasco and Runnegar (2004); and to Mattheviidae by Pojeta et al. (2010).
