Metoptoma nycteis was named by Billings (1865) [Metoptoma Nycteis]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Tryblidium nycteis by Whiteaves (1884), Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Twenhofel (1938) and Wagner (2023).
