Algomella was named by Val'kov and Karlova (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: V N-Da-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1006,1030]. Its type is Algomella calyptrata.

It was assigned to Mollusca by Khomentovsky and Karlova (1993), Sepkoski (2002) and Kouchinsky et al. (2017).
