Monodonta purpurea was named by d’Archiac and de Verneuil (1842). It is not a trace fossil.

It was corrected as Monodonta purpura by Goldfuss (1844); it was recombined as Littorina purpura by Sandberger and Sandberger (1855); it was recombined as Plagiothyra purpura by Whidborne (1892); it was recombined as Euchelus purpura by Koken (1896); it was recombined as Plagiothyra purpurea by Knight (1941), Kaufhold (1994), Frýda (1998), Frýda (2000), Heidelberger (2001), Heidelberger and Amler (2002) and Wagner (2023).
