Murchisonia confusa was named by Whitfield (1889) [Murchisonia? confusa Whitfield 1889]. It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Division E Beds, Section northeast of Shoreham, which is in a Stairsian carbonate limestone/dolomite in the Fort Ann Formation of Vermont.
It was recombined as Hormotoma confusa by Wagner (1999) and Wagner (2023).
