Murchisonia multivolvis was named by Billings (1857). It is not a trace fossil.

It was misspelled as Hormotoma mulivolvis by Sloan and Webers (1987); it was recombined as Hormotoma multivolvis by Twenhofel (1928) and Wagner (2023).
