Natica protogaea was named by Goldfuss (1844). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Naticopsis protogaea by Paeckelmann (1922), Frýda (1998), Heidelberger and Amler (2002), Krawczyński (2006) and Wagner (2023).
