Enigmaconus was named by MacKinnon (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm uMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 529].

It was assigned to Enigmaconidae by MacKinnon (1985); to Mollusca by Sepkoski (2002); and to Yochelcionellidae by Parkhaev (2002) and Bouchet et al. (2005).

MacKinnon 1985Low, slightly cyrtoconic univalves with a well developed transverse plate, or pegma, that projects ventrally from the anterodorsal shell wall, thus dividing the shell interior into two cavities of markedly unequal size; posterior cavity appreciably larger than the anterior. Shell showing relatively little lateral compression; aperture elongate oval.
