Taxonomy
Pileopsis cornuta was named by Hisinger (1837). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Platyceras cornutum by Lindström (1884) and Pitcher (1939); it was recombined as Platyceras (Platyostoma) cornutum by Poulsen (1974), Peel (1977) and Peel (1979); it was recombined as Platyceras (Platyceras) cornutum by Rohr et al. (1981); it was recombined as Platyostoma cornutum by Wagner (2023).
