Pleurotomaria americana was named by Billings (1860). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Liospira americanum by Lehman and Pope (1989); it was recombined as Liospira americana by Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Schuchert (1900), Ruedemann (1901), Troedsson (1928), Wilson (1951), Wagner (2023).
