Taxonomy
Pleurotomaria bilix was named by Conrad (1842). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Cyclonema.

It was recombined as Cyclonema bilex by Tassell (1980); it was recombined as Cyclonema bilix by Hall (1852), Hall (1861), Ulrich and Scofield (1897), Foerste (1923), Wilson (1951), Thompson (1970) and Wagner (2023).
