Taxonomy
Pleurotomaria carbonaria was named by Norwood and Pratten (1855). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Shansiella (Shansiella) carbonaria by Karapunar and Nützel (2022); it was recombined as Shansiella carbonaria by Sturgeon (1964), Yochelson and Saunders (1967), Batten (1972), Kues (1984), Kues and Batten (2001) and Wagner (2023).
