Macroscenella was named by Wilson (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Trep O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Metoptoma superba.

It was assigned to Tryblidioida by Knight and Yochelson (1960); to Scenellidae by Runnegar and Jell (1976); to Mollusca by Yochelson (1994) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Archaeophialidae by Wagner (2023).
