Pleurotomaria itylus was named by Clarke (1904). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Walnut Creek, Forestville, which is in a Famennian marine shale in the Gowanda Shale Formation of New York.
It was recombined as Dictyotomaria itylus by Wagner (2023).
