Protowarthia obesus was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) [Protowarthia obesus Ulrich in Ulrich & Scofield 1897]. Its type specimen is USNM 45961, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Sinuites obesus by Bassler (1915) and Wahlman (1992); it was recombined as Sinuites obesa by Wagner (2023).
