Serpula semiplicata was named by Sandberger and Sandberger (1850). Its type specimen is PA-SA-DO.19, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Odontomaria semiplicata by Sandberger (1884), Whidborne (1892), Heidelberger (2001), Heidelberger and Koch (2005), Frýda et al. (2006) and Wagner (2023).
