Stenotheca unguiformis was named by Ulrich and Scofield (1897) [Stenotheca unguiformis Ulrich in Ulrich & Scofield 1897]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Vallatotheca ungiformis by Foerste (1924); it was recombined as Proplina unguiformis by Knight and Bridge (1944) and Wilson (1951); it was recombined as Vallatotheca unguiformis by Foerste (1914), Wahlman (1992) and Wagner (2023).
