Yunnanopleura was named by Yü (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Tomm-u Sepkoski's reference number: 951,1006]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Purellinae by Feng et al. (2001); to Mollusca by Yü (1987) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Maikhanellidae by Ponder et al. (2007), Parkhaev and Demidenko (2010) and Kouchinsky et al. (2017).

P. Y. Parkhaev and Y. Demidenko 2010"Shell cap-shaped, very low, moderately elongated. Apex hooked downwards and displaced anteriorly, projecting over anterior apertural margin. Posterior field evenly convex, become straight near aperture. Anterior field very short, straight or slightly concave. Aperture egg-shaped with pulled out anterior end. External shell ornamentation scaly, distinct near aperture and smoothed out dorsally. Scales elongated, parallel to growth lines. Anterior field bears larger and more prominent scales, which form triangular flattened dentition on anterior apertural margin."
