Turritella cancellata was named by de Sowerby and Murchison (1839) [de Sowerby in ]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Holopella cancellata by M'Coy (1851), Morris (1854), Huxley and Etheridge (1865), Salter (1873), Baily (1875), Etheridge and Newton (1878), Salter (1881), de la Touche (1884), Etheridge (1888), Stubblefield (1938) and Pitcher (1939); it was recombined as Holopella (Murchisonia) cancellata by Murchison (1854); it was recombined as Loxonema cancellatum by Curtis (1972); it was recombined as Kjerulfonema cancellata by Peel and Yochelson (1976); it was recombined as Rhabdostropha cancellata by Wagner (1999) and Wagner (2023).
