Turritella obsoleta was named by de Sowerby and Murchison (1839) [Turritella obsoleta de Sowerby in Murchison 1839]. It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Loxonema obsoletum by Gall (1971) and Antia (1981); it was recombined as Loxonema obsoleta by Whidborne (1891) and Wagner (2023).
