Paleochiton was named by Smith and Toomey (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Paleochiton kindbladensis.

It was assigned to Gotlandochitonidae by Smith and Toomey (1964); and to Paleoloricata by Sepkoski (2002).
