Platyostoma minutissima was named by Clarke (1885). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Protospirialis.

It was misspelled as Platyostoma minutissimum by Wagner (2020); it was recombined as Protospirialis minutissima by Clarke (1904) and Wagner (2023).
