Taxonomy
Acanthochitona was named by Gray (1821) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 889]. It is extant. Its type is Chiton fascicularis.

It was assigned to Neoloricata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acanthochitonidae by Berry (1922), Ladd (1966), Abbott (1974), Wells and Houston (2001) and Rosenberg (2005).
