Taxonomy
Phoca leptonyx was named by de Blainville (1820). It is extant.

It was recombined as Stenorhynchus leptonyx by Gray (1844), Gray (1850), Gill (1866), Gray (1866), Gray (1871) and Gray (1873); it was recombined as Ogmorhinus (Ogmorhinus) leptonyx by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904) and Friant (1947); it was recombined as Ogmorhinus leptonyx by Turner (1912); it was recombined as Hydrurga leptonyx by Kellogg (1922), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Riedman (1990), Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al. (2003), Cullen et al. (2014), Berta et al. (2018) and Kienle and Berta (2019).
