Taxonomy
Hoplocetus perpinguis was named by Pilleri and Pilleri (1982) [Giovanni Capellini Museum of Palaeontology]. Its type specimen is MGGCB-1COC52, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Valle Ceppi, which is in a Burdigalian marine horizon in Italy.
It was recombined as Scaldicetus perpinguis by Hampe (2006).
