Xenacanthidae was named by Fritsch (1889). It is not extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Pleuracanthidae by Hay (1902).
It was assigned to Ichthyotomi by Jordan (1963); to Pleuracanthodii by Daly (1973); to Xenacanthida by Zangerl (1981); and to Xenacanthiformes by Cappetta (1987), Murry (1989), Heckert (2004), Heckert and Lucas (2006), Ginter et al. (2010), Nelson et al. (2016).
