Ophiactidae was named by Matsumoto (1915). It is extant.
It was assigned to Gnathophiurina by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Gnathophiuridea by Smith et al. (1995) and Jagt (2000); to Ophiurina by Martin-Medrano et al. (2009); to Ophiactidea by O'Hara et al. (2017); and to Ophiactoidea by O'Hara et al. (2018).
