Ophiuridae was named by Lyman (1865). It is extant. Its type is Ophiura.
It was assigned to Chilophiurina by Spencer and Wright (1966), Calzada and Gutiérrez (1988) and Chen et al. (2004); to Chilophiurina by Smith et al. (1995), Jagt (2000) and Storc and Zitt (2008); to Ophiurida by Blake (1975), Radwanski (2002) and Thuy and Kroh (2011); and to Ophiurina by O'Hara et al. (2017) and O'Hara et al. (2018).
