Lepidopleurus was named by Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 1029]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Leptochitoninae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); to Lepidopleuridae by Abbott (1974) and Beesley (1998); and to Neoloricata by Sepkoski (2002).
