Taxonomy
Proterosuchus was named by Broom (1903). Its type is Proterosuchus fergusi. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Howesiidae by Watson (1917); to Archosauriformes by Parrish (1993) and Senter (2004); and to Proterosuchidae by Huene (1922), Charig and Reig (1970), Cruickshank (1972), Romer (1972), Charig and Sues (1976), Cruickshank (1978), Benton (1985), Benton (1990), Welman (1998), Nesbitt (2011), Ezcurra and Butler (2015) and Ezcurra (2016).
