Mithrodiidae was named by Viguier (1878). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Leptognathina by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Valvatida by Perrier (1893), Blake (1989) and Mah and Blake (2012).
