Schizochiton was named by Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Chiton incisus.

It was assigned to Schizochitonidae by Ladd (1966), Beesley (1998) and Wells and Houston (2001); and to Neoloricata by Sepkoski (2002).
