Solasteridae was named by Viguier (1878). It is extant. Its type is Solaster. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987) and Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Eugnathina by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Velatida by Perrier (1894) and Blake (1989); to Spinulosida by Gale (2011); and to Valvatida by Gale (1987) and Mah and Blake (2012).
