Heliasteridae was named by Viguier (1878). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Asteriadina by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Forcipulatida by Gale (2011); and to Forcipulatida by Perrier (1893), Blake (1989) and Mah and Blake (2012).
