Brisingidae was named by Sars (1875). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987).

It was assigned to Brisingina by Fisher (1928) and Spencer and Wright (1966); to Forcipulatida by Gale (1987); to Brisingida by Gale (2011); and to Brisingida by Blake (1989) and Mah and Blake (2012).
