Taxonomy
Watsonella was named by Grabau (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: V N-Da Cm Atda Sepkoski's reference number: 1006]. It is the type genus of Watsonellinae.

It was assigned to Helcionelloida by Wagner (1997); to Ribeirioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Watsonellinae by Parkhaev (2001), Parkhaev (2002) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
