Taxonomy
Oreaster was named by Müller and Troschel (1842). It is extant. It is the type genus of Oreasteridae.

It was reranked as Pentaceros (Oreaster) by von Zittel (1876).

It was assigned to Pentaceros by von Zittel (1876); and to Oreasteridae by Fisher (1911) and Spencer and Wright (1966).
