Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
R. D. Hoare 1990Conocardiid with smooth outer shell layer on body; flattened to concave posterior rostral face; posterior ventral orifice and dorsal rostral clefts present; two longitudinal shelves in snout.

Aphelakardia differs from other Conocardiacea by the lack of radial ribs in the outer shell layer on the body portion of the shell, with the exception of the genus Arceodomus Pojeta and Runnegar (1976). Arceodomus lacks a posterior ventral orifice, has a convexly produced posterior rostral face, lacks dorsal rostral clefts, and is significantly more elongate in form, giving a greater length/width ratio than Aphelakardia.
