Bigalea was named by Pojeta and Runnegar (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl D Give-l Sepkoski's reference number: 542]. It is not extant. Its type is Bigalea yangi. It is the type genus of Bigaleinae.
It was assigned to Hippocardiidae by Pojeta and Runnegar (1976) and Johnston and Chatterton (1983); to Conocardioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bigaleinae by Rogalla and Amler (2006).
