Taxonomy
Murex spectrum was named by Reeve (1846) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Caribbean.]. It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 1950-10-23-1, a shell.

It was recombined as Chicoreus (Chicoreus) spectrum by Vokes (1965) and Vokes (1989).

Synonyms
  • Murex (Chicoreus) argo was named by Clench and Farfante (1945). It is extant. Its type specimen is Liverpool Museum (no #), a shell.

    It was recombined as Chicoreus (Chicoreus) argo by Vokes (1965); it was synonymized subjectively with Chicoreus (Chicoreus) spectrum by Vokes (1974).
