Carniaster was named by Blake and Zonneveld (2004). It is not extant. Its type is Carniaster orchardi. It was considered monophyletic by Blake and Zonneveld (2004).

It was assigned to Valvatacea by Blake and Zonneveld (2004).

D. B. Blake and J.-P. Zonneveld 2004Five-armed neoasteroid with a large disk and prominent arms. Arm tips blunt. Abactinal ossicles tabulate, flanged, arranged in rows. Circumdorsal ring probably differentiated but component ossicles similar to other abactinals. Primary abactinals covered in life by a closely fitted granular and small spinelet(?) layer; large spines not recognized. Marginals in a double, paired series; ossicles tabular, upright, edges rounded. Actinal field apparently large with a single actinal series extending nearly to the tips of the arms. Adambulacral spines robust, simple, conical, small.
